Aim of DJ course:
To give students a robust introduction to DJ’ing, both through theory and practice. This course will equip the students with the knowledge and skills necessary to embark on their chosen DJ path.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understanding the basic function and design of DJ equipment components, including setting equipment up
  • Understanding basic song structure and sound manipulation; EQ’s and effects
  • An overview of dance music genres and associated mixing techniques
  • Understanding and using different mixing techniques, in particular beat-matching with an introduction to scratching
  • An introduction to digital DJ technology and techniques: CD-decks, MP3 player
  • Understanding set programming and recording short demo CD
  • An introduction to ‘The Music Business’ - moving the DJ out of the bedroom.

Course Equipment and Materials:
Cloth Cat will provide all the musical equipment: turntables, CD players, mixers, PA equipment and headphones. The tutor will structure the lessons to include supervised workshops and some taught theory sessions, handouts will be provided on the theory covered. The tutor will also provide records for students to use in the skill workshops. Students are to bring pen and paper; towards the end of the course they can also bring a selection of their own records, to record a basic demo reflecting their musical choice.

Local people interested in developing DJ skills, open to all age groups (16+), women and men. Mainly aimed at beginners, but more experienced DJ’s will equally benefit from some of the theory aspects and being able to explore their own techniques in a group setting.
